The Many Tales ofMaral Borlaaq

Three canons to choose from!

Basic Info

Maral the Adventurer

The backstory of a simple adventurer who wishes to see what this beautiful world has to offer. Unless otherwise discussed, this is her default canon, and will be used for all Walk Up or Tell rps and open RP events.

Maral the Scion

The background of a humble adventurer who learns she has the Echo and joins the Scions in their mission, but does not have the Blessing of Light. Great for plots that interact closely with the MSQ, or people who wish to RP their WoL with OCs who are at least aware of major MSQ events.

Maral the Warrior of Light

The backstory I have crafted for my WoL to fill in the blanks FFXIV leaves for us to explore. Perfect for people who need a WoL for their plot, or for people who RP canon characters and want to interact with a WoL.

*In this canon, both of Maral’s eyes are purpleBorn to the Borlaaq, the all women tribe of the Xaela, Maral spent her youth travelling with her extended family, learning all the skills she would need to survive and thrive on the Azim Steppe. From a young age she could handle a bow with tremendous ease, but her greatest joy was learning music and stories from her grandmothers, and she eagerly repeated what she had learned to the other young girls of her tribe. She spent the first fifteen summers of her life believing that she was her mother’s only child, but upon her fifteenth nameday, Sarangerel relieved the truth to her daughter; Maral had been born a twin, and that her brother had been given away to the Himaa man who was her biological father as part of a deal Sarangerel had made with the man and his wife.Though Maral had never felt like she lacked for want of siblings, the knowledge that she had a brother out there put an ache in her heart that she could not soothe alone. She expressed desire to meet her brother, at least once, should the two tribes cross paths again. Her mother agreed to facilitate this, but by the time the Himaa and Borlaaq crossed paths again nearly six years later, it was too late. The year before, Batbayar Himaa had left the Azim Steppe for adventure. It took Maral some time to steel her resolve and decide that she too would set out for the greater world, if only for the chance to meet Batbayar once. Following rumours of his passage out of Doma into Hingashi, then onto Eorzea, after a few years of travelling Maral found herself in the cold of Ishgard. Out of an abundance of caution, she hid her scales, horns, and tail from the world, having heard rumours of how the west, Ishgardians especially, viewed her people. Thus she was surprised when she finally found her brother working as a low ranking patrol soldier to fund his next adventure with his heritage on full display. It would seem that Batbayar had earned his place shortly after he arrived by coming to the aid of a group of wounded soldiers who were being attacked by a dragon. After an exciting reunion, Maral found that she didn’t want to go home just yet. As much as the culture shock of travel could be jarring, she found that she loved this beautiful world, and wanted to see more of it. Batbayar was easily convinced to join her.Though the twins do resolve to return home to the Azim Steppe one day, for now they are simply having too much fun travelling the land together, and making up for lost time.**Batbayar is pronounced PAT-pier

Maral the Scion

*In this canon, both of Maral’s eyes are purpleBorn to the Borlaaq, the all women tribe of the Xaela, Maral spent her youth travelling with her extended family, learning all the skills she would need to survive and thrive on the Azim Steppe. From a young age she could handle a bow with tremendous ease, but her greatest joy was learning music and stories from her grandmothers, and she eagerly repeated what she had learned to the other young girls of her tribe. When Maral was but eleven summers, her tribe was attacked by the Dotharl, whose powerful mages sent fire streaking through the sky. Though she was expected to flee with the other young girls, Maral knew that her aunt Davaa had been experiencing a difficult labour, and would need help. Despite the danger to herself, Maral rushed to her and the baby’s aid, succeeding in distracting the attacker who had found his way into the birthing tent, allowing the Borlaaq midwife to slay him, and get everyone to safety. It was then that Maral first heard what she would later learn to be Hydaelyn’s voice.A few months following the attack, Maral would experience her first Echo and learn a stunning truth. She was not her mother’s only child. She had been born a twin with a brother, and the brother had been given away to the Himaa man who was Maral’s biological father. After confirming what she experienced with her mother, she expressed a desire to meet her brother one day, just once. Unfortunately, it would be a decade until the Borlaaq and Himaa tribes would visit Reunion at the same time, and by then her brother Batbayar had left the year prior to adventure through the realm. After careful consideration, Maral decided that she would follow her brother out of the Azim Steppe. Following his trail all the way through Doma, to Hingashi, and onto Eorzea, Maral found that adventuring suited her. She spent some time in Gridania aiding the local populace with their troubles, and it was here she would first encounter the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Maral learned the truth of her strange ability to see into the pasts of others, and was offered a spot amongst the group to aid in their mission. Though she still was resolved to find her brother, the restoration of the realm hit hardest by the Seventh Umbral Calamity was a noble cause. Maral would work alongside other Scions such as A’aba Tia and Aulie Meulchamps. It was pure luck she was not there that day at the Waking Sands when it was attacked Livia sas Junius. Despite the horror at what happened, she resolved to support the Scions as best she could.Later her work with the Scions would take her to Ishgard where she would finally find her brother, Batbayar Himaa. Though he was bereft of the Echo, Maral was able to convince him and the Scions that he would be helpful to their cause. Now the twins work together to help bring peace to the realm, and enjoy travelling the world to do so.*Batyara is pronounced PAT-pier

Maral the Warrior of Light

A screenshot from Final Fantasy XIV (14) showing off Maral's main five jobs: Bard, Dark Knight, Red Mage, Astrologian, and Reaper.

*In this canon, Maral’s left eye turned white and she gained a pattern of silvery scars across her entire body– except for her face– that resemble cracked and broken pottery lines, and both of these occur after the main events of Shadbowbringers.Born to the Borlaaq, the all women tribe of the Xaela, Maral spent her youth travelling with her extended family, learning all the skills she would need to survive and thrive on the Azim Steppe. Despite the danger to herself, Maral rushed to her and the baby’s aid, succeeding in distracting the attacker who had found his way into the birthing tent, allowing the Borlaaq midwife to slay him, and get everyone to safety. It was then that Maral first heard what she would later learn to be Hydaelyn’s voice. Her first experience with the Echo a few months after the attack had revealed to Maral that she had a twin brother among the Himaa, and she had longed to meet him. But when she finally met her biological father a decade later, she would learn that Batbayar Himaa had already left the Azim Steppe for adventure. Maral resolved to follow him.Nervous at first to leave her ancestral homeland, Maral took to travel far more than she would have assumed she would. Even the far western city states of Eorzea, a culture shock to be sure, filled her with such joy and wonder, as did helping people with whatever was plaguing them. It felt right to do so.It was in Gridania that she would first encounter the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. Upon learning both of the truth of the Echo and her strange ability to resist being Tempered by Primals, Maral agreed to join in their cause. Her life would never never be the same again. While it was tragedy that would take her to Ishgard, her time there did allow her to finally meet her brother. Batbayar Himaa was surprised to learn that the Champion of Eorzea was his sister– partially due to the fact Maral had spent the entire time hiding her heritage– but he was eager to help her bring an end to the Dragonsong War, and would join the Scions to support their further causes.Though the journey has been hard, and at times she aches for the Azim Steppe which can never truly be her home again, Maral wouldn’t change anything about her life for the world, and she will continue to travel across the star until her dying day, helping anyone who needs it.*Batyara is pronounced PAT-pier
